Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)-CCNA Tutorial

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)an over view

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is a non-proprietary redundancy protocol designed to increase the availability of the default gateway servicing hosts on the same subnet.

Key features of VRRP

1. Provide the concept of virtual router

2. More than one router is configured for virtual router but only one work at a time.

3. If the current one fails the next one will take his place

4. Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) eliminates the single point of failure inherent in the static default routed environment.

5. To terms related to it master and backup.

The VRRP VPN Concentrator that controls the IP address(es) associated with a virtual router is called the Master, and forwards packets sent to those IP addresses. When the Master becomes unavailable, a backup VPN Concentrator takes the place of the Master

VRRP is used in Ethernet and token ring.
