How to prevent copying files to USB drive without disable USB port

Today early morning my friend called me for an urgent help. He is working as a network administrator for a small company and he want to disable copying content from working computer to USB drives (pen drives). I told him simply disable the USB port and fix the issue. Then he said according to the company policy he cannot disable USB port and the computer should read files from the USB drive. So in a nutshell he want to read files from the USB drive on his company computers but don't want to copy files from his company computer to the USB drive. He is in a confusion that is it possible to block writing files to the USB drive without prevent reading from it.


I too at first confused with this strange company policy. Then I realize it is very simple to do. We can enable write protection on USB by GP edit or registry edit. I told him to enable write protection on USB in all the working computer and that will resolve the issue. It is very simple to enable write protection on USB ports in registry.

To perform this we need to edit some registry entries. To do this registry edition follow the steps below.


1. Click on start and go to Run

2. Type regedit on run window and click OK

Now the registry editor will be opened. Now follow


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

3. Create a DWORD value called ‘WriteProtect‘ and set it to 1.


To disable write protect on USB drives change the DWORD to 0.

What is Overclocking and how it reduces the cost of system upgrade

The title of the post is just interesting as it says the importance of overclocking our computer and increase the performance of the system than the manufactures expectations. But before we start overclocking it is better know what actually mean overclocking. Overclocking is the tweaking of your computer and optimize it for better performance. In simple words by overclocking we are utilizing the maximum possible performance of our computer. In case of running applications on our computer which requires more computing power than our computer offered , we should think about overclocking our system. It is always better have a try to improve the performance of our computer than the costly hardware upgrading.

Risks and negative side of overclocking

Overclocking has some negative side too. They are:

1. Warranty issue

By overclocking we are running a computer component at a specification higher than rated by the manufacturer and it may affect the warranty issued by them. In case the device went wrong the vendor may refuse to help us by saying what you did is against the warranty policy.

So it is advised to perform overclocking on old computer if you are not an expert.

2. Processor stability

Overclocking may result system instability. So it is always better check the performance by increasing the rate of speed slowly.

3. Heat generation


Heat generation is an another issue with overclocking. By increasing the performance of the computer equipments the energy consumption will increase. This result over heating.

As a precaution we should daily check the heat sink and cabinet fans and make sure they are working properly.


Even though there are some negative sides I always encourage you to overclock your old computers and increase the performance of the system. Even if you fails it is just a good attempt and will be an asset your tech life.

Unable to start your computer - Disk Boot Failure

On the week end days I was a little bit busy with troubleshooting my friend's old desktop computer. His computer was a dead one and I want to make it alive. He had not been using this computer for last 4 months. We started a fresh installation of Windows XP on his computer as the issue was crashed OS. After reboot we couldn't make it to run ,we received one Disk Boot Failure error message . We just followed the below troubleshooting steps and isolate the actual reason of the issue. Here I am presenting the way I troubleshooted the issue. I used some of my hardware experience and many online tutorials.

Steps to fix the issue Disk Boot Failure

The steps we followed are:

1. Log on to BIOS and reset the BIOS settings

We heard that if the booting option in BIOS went wrong we may receive the error message Disk Boot Failure and cannot boot the computer. We press the [F2] just after power on the system. At first we failed to log on to the BIOS but in a continues attempts some how we get in to the BIOS. Fortunately there was no BIOS password , otherwise it will be a herculean task to log on to BIOS in a corrupted computer.

We reset the boot option and set hard disk the first priority.


2. Unplugged the devices and reconnect it


The second option was make your hands dirty. We opened the computer case and disconnect the BUS and cleaned the devices. Yea a lot of dust was inside the cabinet. We cleaned it and reconnect the devices like hard disk,DVD writer, RAM ,mother board etc. Some after this step the stupid computer start run without any issue. So our assumption is the issue was with some loos connection or dust issues.

Here I am not going to stop writing as I am extending this post with other available troubleshooting steps which we didn't try.


3. Presence of non compatible hardware devices

It is possible that after connecting some non compatible hardware on your computer you may receive the error message Disk Boot Failure and the system fails to boot properly. So it is always advised to disconnect the last added hardware and check for the issue.


4. Corrupted OS or improper partitions

Some times due to the improper partition of the hard-disk may cause this error. Another important reason is corrupted Operating System. If the OS installed on your computer corrupted ,you cannot boot your computer. These two are very important possibilities.


5. Failed Hard disk


Another reason for "Disk Boot Failure" is hard disk failure. If the hard disk drive went wrong you cannot load OS to the memory and the system boot will fail. So to check this error you need to check whether the hard-disk went wrong or not. You can perform it by connecting your hard disk as the slave of another hard drive and check if this disk is detected by the computer or not. If not it is the time to purchase a new hard disk.


6. Mother board issue.

Another rare reason is mother board failure. Some times this error message will come as a result of mother board issues. It is advised to check your mother board if the issue is not related to hard disk and other possible reasons mentioned above.

Configure D-Link Wireless Access Point DWL-G700AP by running Wizard

In this article I am presenting the steps to configure D-Link Wireless Access Point DWL-G700AP in simple steps. Before configuring the Access Point we need to assign static IP address on your computer and connect Access Point to your computer using an Ethernet cable.

How to setup DWL-G700AP by running Wizard

To configure DWL-G700AP follow the steps below.

1. Assign static IP address on your computer

If there is no other DHCP server connected to your computer you need to assign a static IP address on your computer. It should be in the range of 192.168.0.X

2. Connect your computer to Access Point

You should connect the Wireless Access Point (DWL-G700AP) to your computer using an Ethernet cable and power on the Access Point.

3. Access the Configuration page from your computer

To access the configuration page of D-link Access Point DWL-G700AP ,open your Internet Explorer or other browser and type 192.168.0.50 on the address bar. Press enter.

Now it will prompt you to enter admin user name and password to log on. Enter the following details.

Default admin username: admin
Default admin password :

There is no default admin password.

4. Click on Run Wizard



Now it will show the next steps in configuration. Click next.




Now the wizard will prompt you to set a new password for the Access Point. You need to confirm the Access Point password.



After set the password click next.



After Selecting the SSID and wireless channel, click Next.




Now you need to select the Wireless encryption which matches the Wireless router. After selecting the encryption you need to enter the wireless key. Now click Next to continue.




Now you need to click on the Restart button. After restarting the Wireless Access Point you can use it on your network.

I forgot my Laptop password and I can't access my files

Yesterday night my friend called me. His sister just finished her project work on her laptop and to protect the files she changed the password of her Laptop. After changing the password she is not able to log on to her Laptop. It is a Windows XP Laptop and only one user account is there. What she was telling is the Laptop is not accepting her new password and old password. She told me, tomorrow she should present the project in her college and there is no backup files. My Wireless Router causes packet lose and slow wireless connection - Linksys WRT54G

Yesterday night my wireless connection showed some issues. I was connected to the wireless router but the connection speed was very less. I am using Linksys WRT54G wireless router in my home.First I thought it is the Internet connection which is slow. I tested my desktop computer with modem and find out that Internet is working fine. Then I connect my computer to the wireless router through an Ethernet cable and the connection is fine. So it is the problem with wireless connection. 1. Power cycle the wireless router:

In this process you need to unplug the power cable from your wireless router and wait for 30 sec. After 30 seconds you can reconnect the power cable. You need to wait until power, wireless and Ethernet light is ON. In most of the packet loosing(slow wireless connectivity) cases after this step ,the issue will be fixed.

2. Reduce Wireless beacon interval

You can reduce the default beacon Interval to default -100 in advance wireless settings.

3. Reset and reconfigure the wireless router.

The next available solution for slow wireless connection is reset the wireless router and reconfigure it.

3. Installing Firewall


After downloading Guarddog you will get a message like:

After this operation, 67.1MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You need to type Y and press enter to install the Firewall.


PS: If it is the firat time installation of guarddog on your computer , you may get an error message like below.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Setting up guarddog (2.6.0-2.1ubuntu3) ...
Unable to start guarddog firewall - /etc/rc.firewall does not exist
----------------------------------------------------------------

You don't need to worry about the alert and you can directly open Guarddog by following steps.

1. Click on Applications

2. Click on Internet and click on Guarddog
