Why my computer restarts automatically ?- Reasons and solutions

Some of you might face the issue before - 'Your computer automatically restarts without giving any warning or error message. If your computer has this issue ,it is really annoying as you cannot predict when your computer will reboot next. The major reasons for this issue are:

The first thing you need to make sure is if this issue starts after installing any software or driver on your computer. If you think the automatic rebooting issue starts after installing any new software on your computer either you need to uninstall the software from your computer by add/remove programs or the built in software removal utility. If the issue persists even after uninstalling the software on your computer ,you can perform a system restore on your computer to a previous date. So the major points you can do if the issue starts after installing a new software on your computer are:

i. Uninstall the recently installed software

ii. Perform system restore to an old date

The major hardware issues which leads to automatic restart are:

i. Heat related issues

ii. Corrupted system memory

iii. Dust particles in your system cabinet

iv. possible loose connection

Brand new computers are designed in a way that if the processor heat exceeds a certain level your computer will be automatically shut down or restart. So it is the first step you should verify if your computer reboots without any warning... whether my computer has any heat related issues?

The next possible chance is corrupted system memory (RAM). If the RAM modules on your computer is corrupted ,it may cause automatic system reboot. So you should operate your computer with other piece of RAM and check for the issue. It is also advised to disconnect computer hard disk,DVD drive from mother board and reconnect to avoid any loose connection.

Another important reason for automatic computer rebooting is possible virus attack. There are some computer viruses which reboots your computer without your permission. So it is better perform a virus scan on your computer using a reputed AntiVirus software.

If the issue persists even after performing all the steps provided in the article, you can tell your computer to don't restart automatically for any computer error. To do this follow the steps below.


1. Right click on My Computer icon

2. Click the Properties

3. Click on the Advanced tab.

4. Click on the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.




5. In the Startup and Recovery window uncheck the Automatically restart check box.



6. Click OK.

Now onwards your computer will not restart automatically for any kind of computer errors.

PS: Please note that it is risky to uncheck the automatic reboot option without understanding the actual cause of the issue.

I cannot boot my computer in safe mode but normal mode is fine

Some times we may face an issue like our computer is booting and working fine in normal mode but it cannot boot in safe mode. There are many possible reasons for this issues. Some of the possible reasons are:

2. Try to boot your computer in Last Known Good Configuration

If you have failed to boot your computer in all available safe mode options ,it is better try to boot your computer in last known good configuration by selecting that option from the boot menu.

3. Run Check disk and correct disk errors

The next troubleshooting step is to run the check disk and fix the disk errors. To do this type

Chkdsk / f on the command prompt. Please note that you must have admin right to perform this task. After fixing the disk error try to boot your computer in safe mode. If the issue persists follow the steps below.


4. Check the recently installed software/driver

It is better verifie that the recently installed software or drivers are not preventing you from boot your computer in safe mode. Try to update the drivers. It is recommended to perform a clean boot on your computer to rectifie the issue if it is caused by the softwares installed on the computer. 5. Check the settings on the security suit installed on your computer.

Some times the false settings on the security software (Firewall,AntiVirus etc) may prevent you from booting your computer in safe mode. So make sure that these softwares are configured correctly on your computer.

Another major reason which may prevent us to boot our computer in safe mode is virus infection. Some viruses stop safe mode booting in our computer. So it is better do a detailed virus scan on your computer with a reputed security suit. You can also do online scan if the AntiVirus installed on your computer got corrupted.


7. Update to latest service pack and run latest windows update

Another possible troubleshooting step we can do is run latest windows update on our computer and install latest service pack.



8. Repair Windows files on your computer


To perform this you need to boot your computer from Windows CD and press R to repair the windows files while it ask you the option to install or repair Windows on your computer. After repairing Windows files on your computer try to boot your computer in safe mode.

Things are still pretty early -- it's not even in beta yet... but i have to say google has introduced a new concept instead of a regular OS(no worries for MS).But i guess we have to wait and see how things turn out,(well its google they always pull the rabbit out).... Linux (according to me)even though a great os lacked direction and really hope google provides that.... there is no point me explaining CHROM OS its all in the video that google released, so sit back and enjoy....

How to create log files for IP messenger installed on your computer

In most of the companies to communicate with in a LAN employees are using IP messenger. It is always a nice idea to create log file for IP Messenger communication between any other computer in the network and your computer. The steps to setup log file for IP Messenger is very simple.

Setup Log file for IP Messenger

The steps to create log file for IP Messenger is:

1. Run IP Messenger on your computer

2. Right click on the IP Messenger icon on the system tray (Right hand bottom of the screen)

3. Click on settings

Now IP Messenger settings window will be opened.



4. Click on Details/Log Settings

Now we need to specify the location of Log file by click on LogFile button.


Please make sure that you have checked Logging available box.

Now click on Apply and OK.

6. Create Log file

Now we need to go to the location where we mention the log file path. We need to create a text file called ipmsg

How to set filter for emails in your gmail account

Today I am writing one of the small gmail tips to set filter for emails in your gamil account. This post is really for newbies who are not much familiar with gmail account settings. This filter can help you to categorize mails in your account by assigning different Labels for them. The steps to filter emails from a particular sender is:

1. Log on to your gmail account


2. Click on Settings


Settings tab is ion the right hand top of the page.


3. Click on Filters

4. Click on Create a new filter

Now the filter options window will appear.




Now you will get different options to set filters in your gamil account. The possible options are

i. Filter based on from address

ii. Filter based on To address

iii. We can filter a particular subject

iv. We can filter mails containing certain keywords

v. We can set filter by black listing certain keywords (opposite to iv )

5. Enter the criteria to set filter and click next

Now the wizard will ask you what will be the end action of the particular filter.



The possible actions are:

i. Skip the Inbox (Archive it)

ii. Mark as read

iii. Star the mail

iv. Apply the label (We can set a particular label for this mail)

v. Forward to a particular mail

vi. Delete the mail

vii. Never send it to Spam


After selecting appropriate actions click on Create Filter. Now the filter is set on your gmail account.

This is the news reported by Cnet that there was conference held on the week end. In association with the above three companies ,representative from NASA,World Bank, and PR agency SecondMuse were present on the tech event. The major discussion was about the invention of new technologies to aid people when they are in natural calamities and cannot use the normal communication medias.

There were many new ideas and tools explained and the first prize went to the NASA team.It was for a mobile notification application that can be used when regular cellular networks are down and people cannot make phone calls. Enable Wireless Security in D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router (WEP & WPA)

How to setup Wireless Security in D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router

1. Log on to WBR-2310

2. Click on Wireless settings

We can see Wireless Settings tab on the left hand side of the setup page in D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router. Now the wireless settings page will appear. The points we need to remember here are:

i. Check Enable Wireless check box

ii. Change Wireless Network Name to a preferred name


iii. Select Wireless Security Mode

We can select either WEP or WPA from the list. The enhanced security modes like WPA2 and WPA2 Auto are also available.

To enable WEP we need to select WEP Wireless security from the list. Now we will get WEP settings page.



Here we can select either 64 bit encryption or 128 bit encryption.
For 64 bit keys you must enter 10 hex digits into each key box. For 128 bit keys you must enter 26 hex digits into each key box. A hex digit is either a number from 0 to 9 or a letter from A to F. After entering the details click on save settings.

To enable WPA we need to select the WPA wireless security from security mode list. Now the WPA settings page will appear. Here we need to enter the Passphrase (Security key).

How to perform safe browse/ Private browse in google Chrome

I have been using google Chrome since it released but yesterday only I recovered one good feature of google Chrome. The feature is ' google Chrome supports private browsing as Firefox 3.5 do', the details we browse in Chrome private browse will not appear in Browser history or search history. It also says there won't be any cookies will be saved in our computer as the saved cookies will be deleted when we close the Chrome private search window. Google named this feature as incognito.

It is very easy to start Chrome safe browse (incognito). To start this we need to press the following three keys at the same time.

When you press the above key combination one Google chrome window will appear with following message.

How to configure D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router

WBR-2310 is a wireless router from D-link. To configure this wireless router follow the steps below.

Steps to setup D-Link WBR-2310 Wireless router

1. Connect D-link Router WBR-2310 to your computer

Your computer should be connected to the LAN port of WBR-2310 using an Ethernet cable.Power on the router after connecting the router to your computer.

2. Log on to D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router

To logon to WBR-2310 wireless router type the default IP address of the router on the address bar. The default IP address of the D-Link router is 192.168.0.1

Before log on to the router it will ask you the user name and password. For a default D-link router

User Name : admin
Password :

There is no default password for D-link WBR-2310 Wireless Router.



3. Click on Setup Wizard

To configure the router in an easy way click on the button Setup Wizard.



4. Click on Launch Internet Connection Setup Wizard


To configure the Internet connection in this D-link router, click on the button Launch Internet Connection Setup Wizard.


Now the wizard will show you what steps it is going to complete while running the wizard. Click Next to continue.



5. Create new Password For your router



Setup wizard will prompt you to create a new password for your WBR-2310 Wireless Router. After entering the password click on next.

6. Select your Time Zone

Now the setup wizard will prompt you to select your time zone.



7. Configure Internet connection for WBR-2310 Wireless Router

Now you will get the option to setup the Internet connection for your Wireless router.


After selecting the Internet type which is provided by your ISP click on save settings.

How to change Wireless channel in Linksys Wireless Router

In my last post I gave one troubleshooting step , change the wireless channel of the wireless router. Today when I open my inbox there are many feed backs from my readers saying "you have forgot to mention how to change the wireless channel of a router". I gave the steps to change wireless channel in many of my posts as a part of various wireless tweaks. Here I am writing clear steps to change the wireless channel of a wireless router. I am writing the steps based on Linksys wireless router and please note that in most of the wireless routers you can follow the same steps with small differences. Though I am explaining the steps based on Linksys router, I am not providing any screen shots. It is because the steps are for general troubleshooting.


In order to change the wireless channel of a wireless router we need to remember the common wireless channels which works fine. The working wireless channels for your wireless router are

* Wireless Channel 1
* Wireless Channel 6
* Wireless Channel 11

All other wireless channels are useless due to wireless overlapping.

How to change the wireless channel of a wireless router

The steps to change the wireless channel of a wireless router are:

1. Log on to your Wireless router

Type the router IP address on the address bar of your web browser and press enter.
For linksys router it is 192.168.1.1

The the router will ask you for user name and password to log on to it. For brand new linksys router there is no user name and the password is "admin".


2. Go to Wireless tab

Click on wireless tab and look for basic wireless settings. You can see the wireless channel there. You can change the current wireless channel with allowed wireless channels ( channel 1 ,6 or 11)


3. Save settings and log off the wireless router.


Now you have successfully changed the wireless channel of your wireless router.

NO Wireless Network (SSID) from my wireless router

Some times we may face issues with receiving wireless network (SSID) from wireless router. We can see other wireless networks in our computer but not the one from our wireless router. I faced such an issue in the previous week at my home. First I thought it is my Laptop adapter's issue as there was no other wireless networks. My desktop was not working due to my last night's experiment. When I came out and went to a hot-spot my Laptop started showing wireless networks. So I understood it is the problem with my wireless router as it may not broadcasting the wireless signals. So when I came back to my room I started troubleshooting the issue. The major steps I performed are described below in a systematic order.

How to troubleshoot your wireless router when there is no wireless network

The step by step solutions to fix the above wireless issue are:


1. Check the Wireless light on your wireless router

We should make sure that the wireless light on our wireless router is ON.

2. Make sure the SSID broadcast is enabled on your router.

To check this you need to log on to your wireless router and check the status of SSID broadcast.

3. Power cycle the router


It is advised to power cycle your wireless router to fix the non broadcast issues. To perform this you should power off the wireless router for 30 seconds and after 30 seconds power on it again. When the wireless light is steady check for the issue.


4. Change the SSID

It is advised to change the wireless network name (SSID) to fix the issue.


5. Change wireless channel.

You can change the wireless channel to channel 1 ,6 and 11 depends on the current channel.


6. Upgrade the Firmware

One of the most important steps to fix the issue - no wireless networks from the router - is upgrade the firmware of your router to latest version.


7. Reset and reconfigure your wireless router

The last step to fix the issue -no wireless from router- is reset and reconfigure your wireless router.
