Error 651 :The Modem (Connecting Device) has Reported an Error

Today while connecting my laptop to the Internet I received an error message Error 651: The Modem (or other Connecting Device) has Reported an Error. I use Tata Photon Plus to connect my Windows 7 laptop to the Internet. Network Connection Prompt lets me either redial or cancel it. I tried redial option but again I got the same error 651. In this tutorial, I am sharing the steps I followed to fix the message "Error 651: The Modem (or other Connecting Device) has Reported an Error".

Reasons to Get this Message

At first, I checked Microsoft knowledge base for the solution. According to them the reason for Error 651: The Modem (or other Connecting Device) has Reported an Error is with Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). They define the reason for the issue as "It occurs because the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) tries to create a host route and then detects that the route to the host that was created by the dial-up connection already exists". However, I am not sure if it is the right reason for it because I found this answer under Windows 2000 and the message is related to establishing a VPN connection.
651 :The Modem (or other Connecting Device) has Reported

One of the most discussed reasons for Error 651 is the issues with “raspppoe.sys” file of Windows 7. In many support forums, users comment by replacing “raspppoe.sys” file of Windows 7 with Windows Vista, they could fix the issue. I never tried this method so cannot agree or disagree. If the method mentioned in this tutorial does not work for you, it is a suggested workaround.

How to Disable Firefox Software Automatic Update Check

I am a great fan of Firefox browser but I feel little disappointed with their recent policy about increasing the frequency of browser updates. They have reduced the time interval between two Firefox releases and that forced me to adjust to my customization. I use the browsers in my own customized way but whenever I update the current installation, I lose the customization. However, it always looks for new updates and forces me to install the latest release. So I have disabled the automatic check for latest release by Firefox on my computer.

You may see a window like below to alert you the recent release. Since its an automatic check, it can appear at any time on your screen.

I no longer see this alert on my computer because I disabled it. In case if you want to do the same, follow the instructions below.

  1. Start Firefox

  2. Click on Tools or press [Alt] and [T] buttons together

  3. Click on Options

  4. Click on the Advanced tab
  5. Click on the Update tab
    solving bugs of past versions
Now uncheck automatic update check for Firefox.

Firefox No Longer Finds Latest Versions

On the contrary to what I expressed here, some users enjoy the frequent browser updates. They consider it a good way to fix any possible vulnerabilities in the past versions. Such a user will find it awkward if the browser is not detecting the latest release. If you are such a user and the Mozilla browser installed on your laptop is not automatically checking the new versions, you can fix this issue by following the instructions below.
  1. Press [Alt] and [T] buttons together and select Tools

  2. Go to Advanced tab

  3. Go to Update and check the boxes near automatic check for updates.

Is it Good Practice to Unchecked Auto Update Feature
It is not good to keep the feature auto update check for a longer period of time unless you are manually verifying the status of your current Mozilla Firefox browser status on your device. Keeping an older outdated version of the web browser on your PC itself is a great security vulnerability. Its because hackers already know the bugs in older versions and it will give them the advantage to gain access to your PC. Best practice is to ensure all the software installations on your computer is up to date. Here is a list of interesting tutorials for you.
