Error 777 :The Connection Attempt failed due to Remote Computer Out of Order

For the last few weeks I have been getting an error message "Error 777: The Connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order" while connecting to Internet. I use Huawei Access Manager to connect to the Internet because the modem provided by Tata Photon Plus is from Huawei . Mainly the issue occurs in evening (that means the peak time) and the error message prompt me to either redial to connect to the Internet or cancel. Here I would like to share the major reasons of "Error 777: The Connection attempt failed" and its possible solutions. After few attempts I would be able to go online but in some worse cases I waited hours to get rid of the error.

I took the screenshot of the error message.

Error 777: The Connection attempt failed because the modem on the remote computer is out of order

Reasons for Error 777 :The Connection Attempt failed

The possible reasons for Error 777:The Connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order" are:

1. Usage of incorrect driver for your modem

2. The number dialed by your modem is blacklisted

3. Outdated driver for modem

In addition to the above mentioned reasons, I am getting this error message only in peak time. So I assume, the network usage can also be a factor but I am not sure.

Solution for Error 777 :The Connection Attempt failed

The major reason for "Error 777: The Connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order" is faulty modem driver. However, in my experience just restarting the computer itself fixed this issue. So here I would like to share a practical guide to fix this error message.

1. Unplug the modem and reconnect (If you are using USB modem or external modem )

2. Restart your computer

3. Update the driver

4. Uninstall the current modem and reinstall it with latest driver available.

If the issue persist, it is avised to contact your ISP to fix it.

Using White Space Spectrum for Wireless Communication

A tech consortium lead by Microsoft begin their test to check whether white space spectrum can be used for wireless communication like Wi-Fi. This consortium includes Microsoft, British Sky Broadcasting, British Telecom, smart grid start up Neul, Nokia, Samsung, Spectrum Bridge, TTP and BBC. Experiment to check the technical difficulties to use white spectrum for wireless communication launched in Cambridge, UK. White Space spectrum is the unused spectrum between 300MHz and 400MHz normally used for unlicensed uses. Right now some less important devices are using this spectrum and they are unlicensed. Traditionally white space spectrum is allotted for TV broadcast and other Low power wireless devices. This low power wireless devices means indoor and outdoor microphones for broadcasting signals in events like worship, sports etc covering a small geographical area.

Demonstrate white space spectrum for wireless broadband

Advantages of using White Spectrum for Wireless Communication

The major advantage of white space spectrum compared to Wi-Fi is its high Bandwidth (lower frequency). So it can propagate to longer distance and even it can bypass walls. In a nutshell wireless signals will get much larger range and object-penetration power. So most of the limitations of Wi-Fi can be overcome by utilizing white space spectrum for wireless communication. If the experiment becomes a success, it will lead to the arrival of better Wireless Access Points which can cover an entire city unlike small Wireless LANs by Wi-Fi.

Would You like to have Your own Top Level Domain Name (TLD) ?

It seems 2012 will be an important year in case of Internet and Internet users. Two major changes are going to happen in 2012. They are:

1. IPv6 is going to replace IPv4 address format

2. A huge change in Top Level Domain Names (TLD)

I have already discussed about the IPv6 and now I would like to shed some thoughts in new ICANN decision. ICANN is the organization which is responsible for issuing domain names to Internet users. Now ICANN decided to issue Top Level Domain names(TLD) as per the requirements of customers. It means any branded user can request for a top level domain name as their brand name. To better understand let us take the case of Google. Now Google is available to Internet users in the http://www.Google.com address. Here the Top Level Domain (TLD) of Google is "com". If Google register google as their top level domain, they can replace "com" with "google". So Google services will be available as follows (only I guess the address).

http://Gmail.com ---> mail.Google

http://maps.google.com ---> maps.google

http://earth.google.com ---->earth.google

This means Google can assure perfect branding in their service. Like this if I register a TLD "corenetworkz" , I can change my address to http://blog.corenetworkz. Things seems very nice but only someone very rich can afford this service.

The application fee for new TLD is $185k and they should also pay $25k to ICANN annually to continue the service.

One Software Update let all Dropbox Users to Access their account with any password

One faulty software update by Dropbox allowed its users to access their account without the right password. It happened between 1:54pm PT and 5:46pm PT yesterday and the security hole is fixed very soon after discovering it. For the readers who do not know about Dropxox, it is an online file hosting service allowing users to store their files and other data online. The files stored in Dropbox is encrypted and even the employees of Dropbox will not go through the private data stored by users except at few situations like court order etc. The only invited people are allowed to view the user files stored in Dropbox shared folder and they even claim the service is protected from possible hacking attempts. Seems everything is fine from their end but one silly software update changed everything(Possible human error).

In Dropbox forum some customers found it is possible to access user account without right password. After the first post, many users claim the same issue and later Dropbox check the issue and fixed it. Later they confirmed the same issue in Dropbox blog and informed users about suspending all user login sessions till they fix the issue.

Kinect - A Motion Detecting Controller by Microsoft for better Natural User Interface

Which are the normal input systems for a computer ? They are scanner, keyboard etc but have you ever imagine your computer receives your input just by recognizing your motion or speech ? Seems a tough idea but Microsoft moved a step ahead by releasing Kinect, a tool for developers to build applications for Windows PCs which have the ability to sense user motion. It is like a motion detecting controller which sense the motion of the user and interpret it. It seems offer a better computing world where users can give commands to their computers by voices and gestures. If it is true, computing will be more natural and user friendly. Right now this product is in beta stage and the released one is not meant for commercial uses.

How Microsoft Kinect Works

Kinect includes a camera sensor and four-element microphone array to receive input. This system works with Windows 7 and receives the data using sensors and microphone. To understand gesture of a user, it has the ability to track skeleton images of the user. To make the voice clear, the system can remove noise and possible echo.

How IPv6 is Going to Affect Current Network Structure and Implementation

Many online organizations and companies participated the World IPv6 Day held on June-08-2011 and it is considered as a success by many sources. Many experts claim IPv6 is mature enough to be implemented because no major issues happened on IPv6 day as many feared. So we can expect the implementation of IPv6 very soon and I would like to share some of my thoughts about IPv6 implementation. Personally I love to see the IPv6 in my network but the only problem I am facing is the complicated IPv6 address format. However, this small issue is nothing compared to the big advantages IPv6 bring.

May be we can forget the NAT after implementing IPv6 in our network. It is because we do not need private IP addresses any more as no more deficiency of public IP addresses. IPv6 can provide more than enough number of IP addresses. Another feature is IPv6 hosts can autoconfigure themselves while connecting to an IPv6 network. So it reduces the importance of DHCP. IPv6 host autoconfiguration is using Internet Control Message Protocol version 6 (ICMPv6) router discovery messages but if Pv6 stateless address autoconfiguration failed to perform its duty, DHCPv6 will be used to address the host. So in a nutshell we can say, IPv6 reduces the importance of NAT and DHCP.

More IP addresses

Adopting IPv6 can fix the shortage of IP addresses currently we are facing. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses where IPv4 is using 32 bit addresses. The maximum number of IP addresses generated by IPv6 is 340 undecillion (340 X 10^36) and the maximum number of IP addresses generated by IPv4 is only 4.3 billion. The exact number of IP addresses provided by IPv6 is 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456.

Improved Network Security and router performance

One of the major advantage of implementing IPv6 is the improved network transparency. It simply means there is no need to create private IP address for devices to communicate over Internet and no hiding behind NAT. One major improvement in IPv6 is its added security. IPsec is an integral part of IPv6 architecture to improve the network security. IPv6 header format is simple compared to that of IPv4 and it will improves the router performance.

IPv6 Controversies

Like any other movement, IPv6 movement is also not free from controversies. One controversial theorem about replacing IPv4 with IPv6 is to help National security agencies to monitor their citizens more easily. It is because right now many of the electronic devices are behind NAT and using private IP addresses. This make the monitoring a little difficult for official agencies. IPv6 has the ability to provide single public IP address to each device connected to the Internet. It removes one hurdle for external monitoring. Another issue is about the exposing of MAC address over Internet as it is a part of IPv6 address. If the unique MAC address is exposed to the Internet, it will be very easy to track that particular device. Hopefully we can hide our MAC address by enabling Privacy addressing.

Lawsuits between Apple and Nokia are Settled

Apple and Nokia drop lawsuits against each other after Apple agrees to pay the one time royalties to Nokia. It has been nearly two years since Apple and Nokia sued each other by alleging each company violate patent rules. Back in 2009 Nokia sued Apple for using 10 wireless technologies actually patented by Nokia and as a result Apple filed a case arguing Nokia infringes 13 Apple patents. May be it is the failure of Microsoft to i4i in a similar case catalyst the settlement between Apple and Nokia. Though Apple agrees to pay to Nokia, it will be a one time payment based on undisclosed agreement.

Nokia owns over 10,000 patents by spending nearly EUR 43 billion in R&D. Nokia was one of the pioneers in Wireless Technology and they own many important wireless patents. Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia responded to this deal as "We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees". Nokia published this news in their press release today (June 14, 2011).

Be Careful While providing Your Email address to login any websites

While attending my first Internet security class I was informed by the trainer to keep multiple login information for different set of websites. That means it is not safe to use same password to login your different email services, forum accounts etc. You should provide different set of passwords while registering an account in other online services like forums, social network sites, book marking sites, file sharing services etc. Do not imagine the respective webmaster will take care the safety of your information but always plan like your other accounts are safe even if the login details are stolen.

Last Friday one hacker group 'Lulz Security' released a list of nearly 26,000 email address with passwords to login to the respective website account (not the email passwords). They claim this list is generated by accumulating the login details hacked from multiple adult websites. Most surprising news is you can find a handful of official email address (including email addresses issued by governments and respective military) in the list. I do not think they used the original passwords (means the password used to login to the respective email account) or may be I am wrong. The lesson we should remember is' it is not safe to provide same passwords to register for different online accounts'. Many websites keep user information in unencrypted format in their database.

The list of email addresses and passwords are published publicly but I cannot provide a link to that page. It is because I strongly believe it is unethical to provide any information to access a stolen private information of a third party person. Anyway I would like to warn my readers to be vigilant in providing user information while registering for any online accounts.

Are you Ready for IPv6 Day ? Check if You are Ready for IPv6

You may have heard that major Internet companies are going to participate World IPv6 Day. On June-08-2011 major Internet companies like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Limelight Networks etc will be joined to provide their service for IPv6 connections. It will be a 24 hour test flight to test how much this world is ready to migrate to IPv6. It is expected that sooner (most probably in 2011) we will run out of IPv4 address and we need to adopt IPv6 to overcome this. This test flight (24 hour IPv6 day) is to encourage hardware manufactures, Internet Service Providers, operating system vendors to develop their applications for IPv6. This 24 hour test drive will provide enough details about practical difficulties and other issues with complete migration to IPv6.

How to Check if you are ready for IPv6

You can check whether you are ready to migrate IPv6 by visiting the following link.

http://test-ipv6.com/

The below is the result I got when I checked my Windows XP installed old computer using this service.

Check if you are ready for IP version 6

What if my device is not Supporting IPv6

On 08-June major web companies enable IPv6 on their websites for 24 hours and check whether any unexpected issues will occur. You do not need to worry even if your device is not supporting IPv6. On the IPv6 day, those companies who are participating will provide support for both IPv6 and IPv4. So you will not face any issues to access your favorite web services for the reason your device does not support IPv6.
