A Short History of Adobe - Development of New Computer Software Technologies

If you have been following the newest computer technologies over the last 25 years, you will be quite familiar with the evolution of Adobe products. Formally known as Adobe Systems Incorporated, Adobe is a computer software company based in San Jose, California. The main goal of the company throughout the years has been to focus on developing creativity and multimedia software products, relying heavily on the ingenuity of their staff. Recently, they have been testing the waters of Internet application software development, and have been steadily increasing their portfolio to keep up with modern technologies. Here is a brief history of a company that has truly made its mark in the computer technology arms race.

The Founders of Adobe Systems Incorporated

Adobe Systems Incorporated was founded by Charles Geschke and John Warnock, two computer scientists who were inspired to create Adobe while doing research on device-
independent graphic systems and printers for another company. After leaving their jobs, they founded Adobe Systems Inc. in December of 1982, with the hopes of developing and selling their PostScript page description language. This would help cement their role as technological innovators, their ability to translate digital text and images from on a screen, accurately onto the printed page, setting them apart from the rest of their field. After Apple Computers licensed their PostScript in 1985 for use in their LaserWriter Printers, the desktop publishing revolution began, and Adobe was well on it's way to consistently innovating and re-inventing computer technology.

Humble Beginnings

Adobe PostScript, Adobe's first product on the market, was soon followed by other graphic technologies such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Type Manager. By the late 80's and early 90's, digital documentation and work systems were becoming more and more sophisticated, and Adobe's graphic and print technologies were revolutionising the print industry.

Fast Track to Success

Since the first string of successes, Adobe continued to refine their PostScript language, and designed a file format that was based on PostScript technology: the PDF format. Additionally, Adobe released Adobe Acrobat in 1993, and over the next decade, both PDF and Acrobat proved successful with each subsequent version they released. Each year would see the release of new products as well as improvements to old ones. Some great examples of software innovations include Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Flex, Reader LE, Adobe Media player, Aldus, GoLive, Accelio and Macromedia. Their most recent creative endeavours include Dreamweaver software, the launching of Acrobat.com as well as the development of Adobe Creative Suite 4, which include Web, Design, Master Collection and Production Premium.

Adobe Today

Although the company headquarters is based in San Jose, California, Adobe has had international success. With several branches in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, Adobe has become one of the most recognised computer software manufacturers in the world. Adobe Systems Inc. is also repeatedly ranked by Fortune magazine as one of the top companies in the world to work for.

To this day, Adobe software remains completely user-friendly, with Adobe courses available where you can receive helpful Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Indesign training, all great ways to broaden your understanding of the latest and greatest software.

iPhone sales help fuel worldwide smartphone numbers

There are nearly 150 million smartphones out there in the world, according to new figures. Thanks to record breaking sales figures by Apple for the iPhone 4S by the end of 2011 there was almost a 50% increase in the number of devices up on the previous year.

The research by Gartner Inc. claims the figures rose during the final quarter of 2011 thanks to the 30 million plus iPhone 4S' sold by Apple. The results led to Apple becoming the third largest vendor of mobile phones in the world. They also became the top smartphone vendor, with nearly a quarter of global sales in the fourth quarter. Over the rest of 2011, Apple took a fifth of the share of the smartphone market.

The UK and wider Western Europe along with North America were the driving forces for the figures, says Gartner. Up until the launch of the iPhone 4S sales were a little slow. Suddenly the spiked as we all ran out to buy the new device.

Worldwide, mobile device sales figures reached 476.5 million in the fourth quarter of last year. That's a 5.4% increase from the same period the previous year. In the whole of last year, people bought 1.8 billion units, that's up 11% on 2010.

The figures suggest that the mobile market will grow by just under 10% in 2012. The smartphone market is expected to slow slightly to just under 40%.

Nokia is on top worldwide with Samsung in second place, Apple in third, ZTE and LG in fourth and fifth respectively. BlackBerry maker RIM has dropped to seventh with ZTE and Huawei gaining ground. The challenge for RIM this year intensifies so a lot rests on the new BlackBerry 10 due for release later this year.

In terms of operating systems the big battle is still between Google and Apple. Android gets just over 50% of the market share in the fourth quarter of 2011 selling 75 million units. Apple is in second place in the same period, thanks to the iPhone 4S. Symbian is in third and RIM in fourth with 8.8% in the fourth quarter. Showing the work Microsoft needs to do to catch up, in the same period they were in sixth place shifting 2.7 million units and gaining 1.9% market share. That reiterates the disappointing sales figures of the Nokia Lumia 800 that was launched at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2011 but failed to make a major impact compared to its competitors.

New WP devices are likely to be announced by Nokia at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month and Microsoft are also reportedly set to announce a new OS that suits budget mobile devices. Windows Phone 8 is also set or launch later this year suggesting the firm does have growth plans for 2012.

The figures show not only do we love our mobile phones but also how much impact just one device can do. If Apple hadn't launched the iPhone 4S when it did, would we be talking about the world domination of Android and worrying about Apple's future? Possibly, but one good device and an arm of committed fans and they achieve record sales. The mobile market is cut-throat. Roll on the next twelve months when things should get much more exciting.

Using OHS Online Induction Programs for Trades

If you regularly employ (or contract individuals, even other businesses) using online induction software will greatly benefit your working process. Online inductions will give your new employees (or contractors) a very professional experience as they enter your company. More importantly, a proper training program will help alleviate your Occupational Health and Safety obligations. Just because you are in the construction business does not mean you cannot use online tools to get this job done. Smarter business trades industry business owners are turning to web-based business software solutions for a number of reasons.

  • Software provides a centralised training location. Online software applications are more commonly used by those in the trades industries because of their increased need to keep legal OHS documentation stored safely in one place. It is common to have changing employees or contractors in these industries, and moreover, it is very common for them to be working on a variety of sites. • Reduced physical and capital requirements. As we have just mentioned, new employees and new contractors can access your training program online, and that means they can do it anywhere. Reducing the need for costly training rooms and session times, not to mention the time it takes for everyone to participate in your program will be welcomed by your accountants and those who need to participate. Think about a new employee. Would they like to complete the training in the convenience of their own home? The cost of investment into this type of induction program will lower your operational costs.
  • Monitoring your people and knowledge. Compliance training is a big part of OHS. Knowing who has completed their training, and who has passed the tests you require means you are keeping track of your people. Online applications will provide live data for your management team.
  • Keeping a safer workplace. An online OHS training campaign will have a sense of professionalism. Knowing they will also be regularly tested on what they need to know will mean they will understand the need to take their own OHS obligations seriously.

By documenting your OHS training process you are presenting yourself as a more professional organisation, and you are protecting your investment. Not to mention you are creating a safer workplace.

Reasons Why OS-Independent Client-Server Systems Work Well For Business

This is a guest post by Sachin about the reasons Why OS-Independent Client-Server Systems Work Well For Business. Client-server systems are on the increase. With the growing reliance on a number of devices, and more people using an operating system other than Windows, we have seen an increase in the number of business applications, including small business accounting software, for example, running as web-based applications. Managed servers, including those smaller virtual servers sold cheaply online, come with limited support, such as, extremely important features like offsite backup service, and disaster recovery storage. Web-based applications are applications that are written in the code of the Internet. There are a number of advantages of having an application that works in any browser. Here is a look at client-server systems based on the language of the Internet.

  • Client-Server Systems. Client-server systems are everywhere. We are using them without realising. Online banking and Facebook are excellent examples of online applications based on a client-server model that many of us use. The core information is stored on a server, and we use our browser to access and manipulate the data stored. Using HTML5 has some serious benefits. We do not need to choose a server setup that is operating system specific to run these applications.
  • Composite Solutions. These days, all software, and many business applications, such as, accounting software, are being produced in HTML5. This means the applications work in your browser. You see the application as website, but actually it can be a business software application that includes your taxation, customer access, job costing, stock management. These days these types of applications have become very advanced. They can include many other areas of our business, including job costing, taxation management, billing, stock management, communicationsand more.
  • Multi-device. These days many people are using multiple devices. They are using smart phones, tablets, laptops and personal computers. Many of these devices run on different operating systems. When we use browser-based, web-based applications any device can access them. It doesn’t matter if you are using Apple’s iOS, OSX, a Nokia phone, or a Windows-based system, you can access the website, just like we do with Facebook.
  • No Software download to access. Although you may need an add-on for your browser, there is really no software download when you use this type of software. This means it is easier for your people and your customers to access and use. We can also manage our access with user name and passwords at the point of access, again just like Facebook does with its users.
  • More Developers. The HTML5 language is very popular, and there are many people makingapplications and understand this language. This means we have a larger pool of developers who can develop these applications.
  • People are acclimatised. With an increase in user tools such as online banking and applications like Facebook, the ordinary personal computer user has become very used to the idea of using an online application.

In addition of all of the benefits above, we have even more reason why we will see the popularity of web-based applications will increase. The new Windows 8 OS will allow HTML5-based applications run natively on the operating system. This will mean we can get more power out of our personal computer instead of being limited by our browser’s access. Considering the majority of business and personal users are running the Windows system, we can expect HTML5 based applications soon to become the norm. The more traditional applications are going to be seriously challenged.

Google Apps for Education taking root in online learning environments

This is a guest post by Lindsey Harper Mac. Today’s college students grew up with Google. To them, Google has always been a verb and that little search box has always been the gateway to information on just about anything. The average college freshman entering a university today will Google something before heading to the library to research it in the traditional way. In light of this, it is no wonder that the Google Apps for Education platform is starting to take over the world of education.

Connectivity with lower cost

According to Google.com, more than 60% of the Top 100 schools in the United States use Google Apps for Education. This number will only continue to grow as more and more universities embrace free programming in their schools. Online colleges will especially benefit as administrators need to find affordable ways to keep students and faculty connected in spite of the geographic distance between them. Incorporating Google Apps for Education into the online learning environment helps lower costs while still maintaining open communication between students and faculty.

Students in online learning environments sometimes struggle to share files with their professors and fellow students due to software compatibility. In a traditional classroom this is less of a problem because the student can just turn in a paper document for many projects. In an online classroom, however, the ability to share files is a necessity. Google Apps allow anyone who has access to an Internet-ready computer to quickly and efficiently share documents, regardless of the software on each computer. Even Mac and PC users can easily collaborate and share files using Google Apps.

Google Apps for Education has created a very feasible system that helps students and teachers in their classes. Some of the more popular features are:

  • Google Docs: An app whose focus is collaboration, which is all the more important with online learners who don't have physical classrooms in which to generate interactivity. Students can access the system to participate in group projects and compile ideas, no matter where they are in the world.
  • Google Video: Students who use this app can share videos with fellow group members or professors as part of course study or for fun.
  • Google Calendar: Ever important for busy students, especially those whose coursework and study takes place outside the structured classroom, Google Calendar helps students keep track of when assignments are due, test dates, and share pertinent times and dates with members of their peer group.
  • Google Sites: A quick and easy-to-use app, Google sites gives students a way to create websites, whether for a mid-semester activity or final project. Google Doc and Google Calendar files can be used with the app.
  • Google Talk: Gives students and faculty access to instant, voice, and video messaging.

At the heart of Google Apps for Education is a collaborative virtual environment where students can easily share work with one another and their teachers, thereby mimicking the in-person classroom experience. Students can perform peer reviews of coursework, engage in group discussions, and work together on projects, even while living in different parts of the country.

Other software programs exist for online educators who want to be able to connect virtually with their students, but none offer the affordability and global appeal of Google Apps for Education. To save money and make access more convenient for students, universities around the country, both on and offline, are making the switch to Google.

Five Extremely Bad and Common Online and Offline Marketing Disasters

This is a guest post by Sachin about 5 Extremely Bad and Common Online and Offline Marketing Disasters. While there has been a boom in online marketing, facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, and other social media marketing, we continually see ridiculous offers that we don’t believe. The same has been the case with offline marketing for many years. Bad marketing strategies are everywhere, and they are a cheap grab at getting attention that normally leads to a company losing business. They can damage your brand for many years to come. Bad marketing has become so common, it seems that many business owners have forgotten what it is like to be a customer. Here is a look at some of those common and disastrous marketing strategies that definitely don’t do anyone any good.

  • Website exchange programs. If you don’t know anything about SEO (search engine optimisation), it is about time you learnt a little. Google will not help out your site just because you have exchanged a high number of links. Linking with sites that have nothing to do with your site will only clutter your own website, and make it harder for Internet users to find you through the search engines.
  • Spamming and overkill. Have you ever joined a website and tried to get off that list only to find you are receiving those annoying emails? The same goes with letterbox drops. There is a limit to what you can do, and a limit to what you should do. You should always include an opt-out option with your emails, and limit your flyers to a reasonable limit – you might appear extremely eco-unfriendly.
  • Poor quality novelty and other gifts. Online printing services can produce a lot more than your printing needs. They can print on just about anything. Some printing suppliers will ask you to supply your novelties, and others will have their own in stock. If you are giving novelties or other gifts, make sure they are of extremely high quality. If your gifts are low quality, your business will appear low quality too.
  • The offer with the asterisk. There is nothing more uninteresting to any potential client than the offer with the asterisk at the end. That signals to them the offer does not exist. If you are going to make a loud and promiscuous claim, do it with something you can deliver. Making conditional claims, only means you are claiming something you cannot really do. You will only annoy potential clients, and they will probably ignore you in the future.
  • The no offer, offer. How many times have you read marketing material that actually just sounds like a narcissistic blurb? There is no point telling people how great you are at doing something without a call to action. Actions speak louder than words. Assistance through content and a demonstration of your knowledge and abilities will work much better than just telling everyone how great you are.

It does not matter what medium you are using to get your message across, the same rules of good and bad marketing apply. Are you treating your viewers and target market with the same intelligence you would like to be treated with?

Getting DNS Error While Accessing Modem Setup Page

One of my blog reader asked a question last day about getting DNS error while trying to access his modem setup page. He said his modem's default IP address is 192.168.1.1 but when he type this IP address on address bar of browser, he gets DNS error message. Though it was a comment, I think it is better post the troubleshooting guide for all readers.

steps to fix DNS error while accessing modem

Some of the practical solutions to fix this error are:

1. Make sure you have the right modem IP address

Many users make the same mistake by trying different IP address (not the original modem IP address) to access modem. So the first step is to ensure the IP address you are using is the right modem IP address.

2. Check the connection

Make sure modem and computer are connected properly. It is recommended to unplug the Ethernet cable and reconnect it.

5 Common Examples Of Website Design Mistakes by Business Owners

This is a guest post by Sachin about five Common Examples Of Website Design Mistakes by Business Owners .When most business owners think about website design, they think about a brochure online. Online shopping sites are making a lot of money with the use of web-based applications to sell products, collect payments an arrange delivery. The only work left to do is pack and send the boxes. Smart applications can even print out the labels, so the only thing left to do it stick them on the box. Unfortunately, in many cases, websites are replacing people. For those of us left with a job, we can be thankful that many business owners make the following mistakes when it comes to websites and web design.

  • Don’t have one. This is the first and biggest problem of most business owners when it comes to website design. They think they don’t need one. Who can ever really do with less business? The reason why they have not been getting business from online sources in the past is because they have not been involved. More people are turning to online sources when they search for a supplier. Even a local business can use Google Places to market to local customers via the Internet.
  • It is a brochure. A website should be more than just displaying business details. With browser-based applications and intelligent site design, the possibilities are limitless. Your site is a tool of doing business and not just a window display. Even Windows terminal emulator applications can be built into a site to allow suppliers deal with your IBM mainframe. That is some serious technology. A new supplier in a new country doesn’t need to setup a complicated IT infrastructure or spend huge amounts of money on new applications because they can just logon to your website.
  • It is static. The whole point of having is a website to have people coming back. A site that does not change does not give them much reason to be coming back. By visiting a site the customer is staying involved with a company. Content management systems make it easy for anyone to constantly modify a site and add content without any programming ability. A static site is a useless site. Even by simply changing the look of the home page of a website we generate immediate interest.
  • It doesn’t collect data. Data collection of visitors is very useful for any business. It means you know who is coming, where they are coming from, and what they were doing on your site. Cookies are already common, but there is a lot we can learn from having them. You might be a car parts supplier. You have a lot of clients looking at your site from a particular region. It might be time to recruit a local representative and get your business deep into that region.
  • It doesn’t make money. If you are going to invest in a site, you want more than online marketing. You want sales and you want business leads. You want it to collect money. Too often than not, business owners forget their site can be making them money.

With the boom in social media marketing we have seen a boom and re-interest in the power of the Internet. Is it time you got the most out of smart-site design, or do you want to be left behind by your competitors? We are talking the minimum standards of business at this point.

How to Reduce Your Need for Home Computer Repairs

This is a guest post by Sachin about how to Reduce Your Need for Home Computer Repairs. Some of us are still afraid to use our computers for fear of calling for computer repairs. In most cases, we will not need pc repairs or laptop repairs if we follow some basic principles. Computers only have a limited lifetime. The fact is the world of technology is changing so fast, if we don’t spend the money to stay with that change, personal computers actually end up costing us a lot more. Here is how to reduce, if not completely avoid the need for repairs.

  • New devices. If you are using a personal computer that is more than 2 years old, you can bet you will start to have problems. The problems are not related to the hardware. The only real place you have problems is with your hard drive. Replacing that will not cost much money. The problems relate to protocols of communication and the speed of your device. Older machines are slow, and cannot keep up-to-date software running. New devices are more stable and they rarely have problems.
  • Staying up-to-date. Staying up-to-date with software and applications is essential to your computer running smoothly. Older applications do not communicate well with the newer versions and eventually become obsolete. To stay up-to-date, we need to update software, which will be put more pressure on our machines. As you can see, we are caught in a cycle of updating software to get the most out of what is currently on offer, and then we need to update our machine to have enough power to drive that software. New software is getting better, and this means it is easier to use, and we have less problems with it. Updated software often includes fixes and removal of problems on the previous versions.
  • Virus and malware protection. The best way to avoid virus removal is not to have one in the first place. Most virus and malware will enter your computer when you download files or you view suspicious websites. We have to be very careful as a small intrusion can cause a lot of problems. Spyware watches for malware, and anti-virus protects for viruses. Make sure the protection you are using covers both. It is important to note, the newer the operating system and the latest browsers are doing a lot to protect us as well.
  • Follow the basics. Treating your machine right will do you justice. Don’t drink, eat or smoke around your machine, turn it off properly, and make sure you keep it relatively dust free. Just following the simple prompts of your computer will mean you are doing what you should. We cannot do anything dangerously wrong. The worst thing we can do is delete something. You will always get a warning and have a second chance. It is that simple.

Follow these basic principles and you will not always be calling for computer support. It is not that hard, use your computer one step at a time, and use it with confidence. Read what is written on the screen.
