Reduce Firefox RAM usage and Improve System Performance

If you are running with low RAM on your computer, you can improve the system performance a little by reducing the Random Access Memory usage of Firefox browser. By default there is a minimum RAM usage reserved by Firefox than it actually needs. If your PC is brand new with enough RAM modules, you do not need to worry this part. However, for an older computer system, you may need to release the unnecessarily reserved RAM/cache usage by programs installed. If you do not know how to check the current RAM usage set on Mozilla browser, follow the instructions provided here.

Steps to Disable Over RAM usage of Firefox Browser

To do this, follow the instructions carefully.

  1. Access Config Window

Type about:config on address bar and press enter. Now we will get a warning window like below. We should click I'll be careful, I promise button.

  2. Right click on browser.cache.disk.capacity

Now find "browser.cache.disk.capacity" in the Firefox configuration window and right click on that. The default value set for browser cache is 51200. To reduce this, click on modify.
Reduce cache usage (of Firefox browser

Now set the new value to 20000 to limit the cache usage of Firefox.

Always make sure the changes do not affect the permanence of Firefox. If you are seeing any performance issues, you have to change the value to default and then reduce the cache usage step by step. For example if the limit 20000 is not sufficient, you have to increase it to 30000 and check. If the issue persists you have to set the limit as 35000. You can use different values as per the needs.

What is difference between Internet Speed & Bandwidth ? - ISP offer bandwidth

I never thought these two words Internet bandwidth and Internet speed are so much confusing for regular Internet users before I talk with a CCNA guy. Even though he finished his CCNA while speaking about the ISP packages he refers both terms Internet
speed and Internet bandwidth are same. Like him many Internet users are referring both this speed and bandwidth are same and they never understand these two are different.

Difference between Internet speed and bandwidth

Internet speed and bandwidth are technically different. Bandwidth is referring the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time through the network while speed is the time taken to reach the data (in form of packets) from source to destination. So we can see bandwidth is a fixed one while network speed can vary. Network speed depends on many factors like the protocol using to send data, server efficiency ,network conjunction etc. In practical life a
user feels the Internet speed by downloading certain files from server to his computer. Yes it is true high bandwidth really helps to download the file faster but there are some other factors are there. If he is downloading the file (consider a big
file like video) from a slow server, he feels his Internet speed is very less. Actually his Internet bandwidth is good enough but the speed of data transfer is limited by the response delay of the remote server.

Another factor really affect the Internet speed is the kind of protocol they use. The speed of data transfer vary depends on whether this connection is using a connection oriented protocol (TCP) or connection less protocol (UDP). As there is no error detection and synchronizing ,data transfer using UDP is always faster than the same in TCP. Here Internet bandwidth is a constant but the Internet speed vary.

So in a nutshell Internet speed and Internet bandwidth are different. Internet bandwidth is the one which is assigned by your ISP and which is a constant (as long as your ISP keeps its promise) while Internet speed vary with remote server and the
protocol they use to send data.

Protect Computer From Overheating and Keep PC Cool

I had been facing computer overheating issue for a week till yesterday. When ever I start certain applications, computer would shutdown automatically without giving any warning. After rebooting the PC, it was written there previous shutdown was due to processor overheat. Applications like Firefox, Internet explorer etc works fine but whenever I load heavy tools, I faced this overheating issue. It was so frustrating and I decided to fix it and make my PC cool. This guide tells an enhanced process to deal with processor overheating issues.

Reasons for Computer Overheating

It is not uncommon to have this heat issues on a PC. There are many reasons for it but some of the most common causes are listed below.

  1. CPU fan failed to work

  2. Heat sink issue

  3. Dust inside the cabinet

  4. Flow of hot air from cabinet is blocked

  5. PC Overclocking

If your laptop is facing any heat related issues first place to check is the cabinet and processor fans. If the fans are not working properly, it can increase the temperature inside the CPU. Another reason is faulty heat sink and not doing its job properly. Heat sink is the device designed to remove extra heat from processor to surrounding air and keeps the processor cool. The dust inside the cabinet can indirectly increase the temperature inside cabinet. It can reduce the speed and functionality of your computer fan. Another major reason for CPU overheating is the denial of free flow of hot air from your computer cabinet. This can increase the temperature inside cabinet. PC overclocking too can increase the temperature produced by CPU.

Solutions to avoid PC overheating issues

The first step we should do is to check whether the fans in your cabinet are working properly or not. If any one of the fans are not working properly, change the fan immediately. Always make sure that hot air flow from your computer is not blocked by surrounding materials. If there is any dust inside your cabinet, clean that. Changing heat sink and revert back overclocking are other options to reduce computer overheating.

Create, Manage and Delete Wireless Filters On Windows

Windows allows users to manage IEEE802.11 networks from Command Prompt. It is done by creating wireless filters to prevent that computer from connecting to the specific WiFi network. Settings wireless filter is very important in case if you suspect your PC may join a suspicious wireless network and risk the security. One of the major threat of a computer with WiFi facility is to get connected to suspicious Ad-hoc networks. A hacker runs an ad-hoc network can steal data from your computer if it is connected it and the risk is higher if file and printer sharing are enabled. A properly set WLAN filter can protect your laptop from all the above risks. This tutorial explains how to create, manage and remove WLAN filter on Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista and XP computers.

How To Manage Wireless Filters

This section explains Command Prompt method to set wireless filer for a WiFi network on Windows PC. It also explains how to delete the Wlan filter in case if you no longer want to block that particular network on your computer. We can block both infrastructure and Ad-hoc networks by creating filters. I have explained this part with practical examples.
  1. Block a Wireless Network By Wlan Filter

You can set wireless filters for both adhoc and infrastructure 802.11 networks. Format of the code to create wireless filter to block a network is provided below.

    netsh wlan add filter permission={allow|block|denyall} ssid=NETWORKNAME networktype={infrastructure|adhoc}

Now let us consider a practical example. Here I am going to create a filter for WiFi network "Siju1". It is an adhoc network and the command to enable filter to block it is given below. You must start Command Prompt as administrator to perform it. Right click on cmd on Window search and select run as administrator. Before running this command, make sure WLAN AutoConfig service is started.

    netsh wlan add filter permission=block ssid=siju1 networktype=adhoc

If you haven't completed above two tasks, you may get an error like this.
    stop service

Now we must do following tasks.

If you have completed these two steps before running the command on DOS prompt, you will get a message like this.

You will see the message the filter is added on the system successfully.

  2. Show All Wireless Filters Set

If any wireless filter is set on your computer ago, it will stop you from accessing the specific network. So, in order to verify there are no unauthorized or unwanted wireless filters are turned on, you must periodically check all WLAN filters set on your Windows computer. You cam display all available wireless filters by typing following command on Command Prompt.

    netsh wlan show filters

  3. Delete Wlan Filter

If any wireless filters set on your computer to prevent from connecting to a specific connection, you can remove them from DOS prompt itself. The syntax for the command to delete filter is given below.

    netsh wlan delete filter permission={allow|block|denyall} ssid=NETWORKNAME networktype={infrastructure|adhoc}

Now let us check the procedure to check and remove unwanted filters.

    • View available filters by running the command netsh wlan show filters on DOS Prompt.

Here I need to delete sij1u1 filter.

    • Type the command below to delete the specific filter. Make sure DOS prompt is running as administrator.

      netsh wlan delete filter permission=block ssid=siju1 networktype=adhoc

    • Press enter button

Start WLAN AutoConfig (WLANSVC Service) On Windows 8 & Windows 7

WLAN AutoConfig service ( WLANSVC ) helps Windows 8 and Windows 7 computers to discover  a wireless network (802.11 standards) and connect to it. The same service is used in  Vista instead of Wireless Zero Configuration(WZC) in Windows XP. In my personal experience by starting WLAN AutoConfig service instead of vendor wireless utilities on a computer, we can fix most of the wireless connectivity issues. Windows 8,  7 and Vista computers use WLANSVC service to manage wireless networks and you can find it on services window under the display name WLAN Autoconfig. Sometimes WLAN AutoConfig does not start automatically  by some strange reasons. So we may need to go to the service page and start this service manually. This tutorial tells how to run it on a  computer in different ways.

How to Start WLAN AutoConfig From Services
  1. Type services.msc on Search

  2. Click Services when shows in Search

Changing Wireless Channel to Improve Wireless Signal Quality

Quality of WiFi signal from an Access Point(AP) is determined by many factors in addition to the device quality. wireless interference, obstacles in between your laptop and AP, power of antennas etc can influence the total signal strength. One common reason for low signal quality is the competition between different WiFi routers to use the same wireless channel. We can test it by changing the current channel to different one. IEEE802.11 networks use multiple WiFi channels starting from 1 to 11. Among these, the useful are 1,6 and 11. We should use one among these three because these three are having no overlapping. If your router is using channel 1, you can change it to 6 or 11 and check for improvements in signal quality. If you are using smart AP which can detect the best channel by analyzing the interference, you should set auto. Most modern devices support this auto detection feature.

Now let us check the relation between interference and Wireless channel. Normally we consider the interference by other devices which uses the same frequency of Access Point. Two devices having same frequency range can cause WiFi interference. It can be avoided by increasing the distance between them. Interference in same wireless channel is also similar. If more than one WiFi device broadcast signal in the same channel, it cause interference and reduce the wireless quality. For example if your router use 1 to broadcast signal, you do not need to change it as long as there are no other routers or APs use the same number. However, if multiple devices use 1, to broadcast, you may need to change to 6 or 11 to avoid interference. 1, 6 and 11 are the three non-overlapping channels.

Changing Channel will not Change the Frequency

If you are using IEEE802.11g device to broadcast, changing the channel will not change the working frequency. 11g device works in 2.4GHz frequency. 11a works in 5 GHz and 11b standard uses 5 GHz. If you go for 802.11n standard, it can operate in both 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Though backward compatible with 802.11n, IEEE802.11ac standard works in 5GHz only.
