How to Become a CBI Officer in India?

Becoming an officer in the Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) is a dream of many youths in India. Though this elite investigation agency is popular among the public, most people do not know the selection procedure to become a CBI officer.

This article explains the various criteria, eligibility, exam pattern, and procedure to become a CBI officer.

How to Join CBI as an Officer?

Two different agencies conduct examinations to fill vacancies in CBI. They are UPSC and SSC.

To become a group A officer in CBI, you must choose the Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC and become an IPS officer. To join as Sub Inspector in CBI, you must go through the SSC CGL examination.

How to Apply For CBI Sub Inspector Post?
To become an Officer in CBI, you must pass the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL ) conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) every year.

SSC invites applications for the CGL examination every year, and you can apply on their official website.

It is a four-tier examination. The first two stages are online objective-type examinations.

The third stage is a descriptive type using pen and paper.  The final stage is document verification.

    SSC accepts degree from any universities approved by UGC (University Grants Commission). Punjab Technical university (PTU) is approved by UGC. So any degree offered by PTU is valid to SSC and degree holders from PTU can apply for SSC CGL examination conducted to recruit CBI Sub Inspectors. You can check the list of State Universities in Punjab approved by UGC from the link below.

    http://www.ugc.ac.in/stateuniversitylist.aspx?id=28&Unitype=2

    Now the second part of your question. Since you are doing off campus degree from PTU in Distance Education mode, it is important to know whether PTU Distance Education is approved by Distance Education Council. Even though any Distance Education degree from UGC approved Universities is equal to regular degree, it is better the distance education program is approved by Distance Education Council. I couldn't find the latest list of approved universities offer distance education mode, so I recommend you to contact PTU enquiry department to verify it. Toll free number to call PTU DE is 1800 266 2501 and make sure you call between 9 am to 5pm. You may also go through the university website.

    Usually you will get alerts by SMS or E-mail from SSC about the procedure to collect your appointment letter.

    Since your degree is from a foreign country, you may be asked to produce an equivalence certificate from a recognized University in India. If you can produce an equivalence certificate for your degree from a UGC approved University, you won't face any issue on applying for CBI SI post.

    @P K Tiwari

    Since you have your degree from SMU DE, you must ensure that the degree you earned is approved by UGC and Distance Education Council.

    To apply for Officer posts in CBI or other police forces in India, you must have a degree. So you cannot apply for SSC CGL examination.

    SSC CHSL is one of the best suited for those do not have degree (anyone has pass in plus two or equivalent can apply) but its upper age limit for general category is 27. You should also start looking for state PSC examinations which suited for your qualification. Another opportunity is public sector companies which recruit diploma engineers.

    Public Service Commission (PSC) is a constitutional body which is responsible for the recruitment of state government employees. To apply for jobs selected by state PSC, you must register with official PSC website (of your state) and start looking for new entries in notifications sections every week. PSC will update its all recruitment notifications on their official website. So you won't miss any of them.

    @ akruthi edla

    You must have a valid degree at the time of SSC CGL notification. Since you are waiting for your results, I am afraid you cannot apply this time.

    @ SYED SHOEB

    Diploma in mechanical engineering is not enough to apply for SSC CGL or UPSC (group A) examinations. You must have a degree ( if in Engineering, you must have BE/ B.Tech) to apply for both SSC CGL or other group A service examinations.

    Upper age limit to apply for CBI post is 30 for open category candidates. I suggest you to try for Civil Service examination as the upper age limit is 32 years.

    @ allahabadi boys

    Height for open category is 165 cm and 5 cm relaxation is allowed for ST and Hills-men candidates only. I couldn't find height relaxation for SC in the latest SSC notification. I recommend you to contact SSC help desk to get more help.

    @ kalyan uddisa

    I strongly recommend you to verify whether your degree is approved by UGC. I feel it strange for any university accept a student for degree program without a 12th or equivalent program.

    @ Ex.Hacker

    Only a pass is required.

    @tanvi

    Not possible. Only last year BSC students who can get degree certificate before August 1 can apply.

    Anyone with B.Tech can apply
