S.M.A.R.T. Technology in Hard Disks: Study Notes for Kerala PSC & SSC IT Exams

Updated on January 02, 2026

Welcome to the Computer Science and Technology Study Materials section from CoreNetworkZ EdTech Solutions, a leading mock test and exam preparation platform, for students preparing for SSC, DSSSB, and Kerala PSC examinations. Today, I will explain S.M.A.R.T. technology.

Expansion of S.M.A.R.T. is a frequently asked question in the Computer Assistant and Data Entry Operator exams. This technology is vital for the 'Maintenance & Troubleshooting' section of the Kerala PSC Degree Level syllabus and ISRO VSSC Technical Assistant test. Candidates must understand how BIOS interacts with hardware to predict failures.

My First Experience

Last night I encountered a strange error on my computer. I couldn't boot my PC and failed my efforts to load the Operating System. Instead of the Windows login screen, I reached an error message: Hard Disk SMART Command Failed. Whatever the error, it affected the keyboard. Other than the Tab key, no other keys were working. This article explains the meaning of the Hard Disk SMART Command Failed error message.

Why Am I Getting S.M.A.R.T. Command Failed Boot Error?

SMART is a BIOS feature that stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, which monitors the health of the Hard Disk Drive.

If the S.M.A.R.T. feature in BIOS detects HDD malfunctioning, you will get this error message while booting your computer. It is a confusing situation because whenever you reboot your PC, it returns to the same error page in a loop. Whatever you do, this error will prevent you from booting your computer.

Reasons

  1. Physical Wear and Tear (Mechanical Failure)

  2. Excessive Bad Sectors (Reallocated Sectors)

  3. Excessive Heat (Thermal Stress)

  4. Electronic Component Failure

  5. Loose SATA/IDE Cables

How does This Study Material help PSC, SSC, and DSSSB Aspirants?

SSC, DSSSB, and Kerala PSC conduct examinations for various IT posts.

Understanding S.M.A.R.T. Technology is essential for candidates appearing for the Kerala PSC Degree Level Exam, SSC Scientific Assistant (CS), and System Analyst posts. These hardware fundamentals are core parts of the Computer Science syllabus.

Kerala PSC Degree Level examinations have a Computer Science section where students can expect questions that require them to explain the reasons behind S.M.A.R.T. Technology error codes. You can check the Kerala PSC Degree Level Common Prelims Syllabus under the Computer Science section. I recommend you download the syllabus using this official link.

If anyone doesn't see S.M.A.R.T feature in BIOS, you might check in advanced settings.

  12. Well, that is troublesome...
My hard drive is not even half a year old and I had to buy it after my old one, which wasn't older than a year at the time, broke down. Does S.M.A.R.T. check for temperature as well? I have a habit of leaving the window opened overnight so in the morning it's freezing cold. I know it affects the CP, maybe the hard drive as well?

  13. @unknown,

It is widely considered as temperature below 25°C can damage HDD. However, the common reason for hard disk failure is the improper shutdown or sudden power off. Make sure you have shut down the computer after your use.
