Getting error code 0x80070424 after running Windows live update

To fix the issue we need to follow the steps below.

1. Go to Start>Run
2. Type regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
3. Click on OK wait a few seconds, then click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box.

Now, open the registry editor

1. Click on Start>Run key in regedit then click on OK

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

Look for a DeleteFlag value and, if it exists, right-click on it and select
Delete.

This fixed two problems for me. First i couldn't get automatic updates turned on and second i couldn't get Windows Defender to update. This solved my problem. Thanks for the information.

What if there is no DeleteFlag value to delete? I was able to navigate to the desired locale but I did not see a DeleteFlag value.

If the flag is not present, you do not need to worry about it.
